Historic moment captured on film at The Rendezvous in Monaco

June 25, 2010

The Port of Monaco may be considered the European home of superyachting, but even this glittering Principality had never witnessed the spectacle of 10 superyachts representing nine of the world’s largest shipyards motoring across the sea in beautifully orchestrated formation.

Day 2 of The Rendezvous saw the fleet depart the harbour one by one this morning to gather for the formation cruise. A hectic time for the harbour master but a wonderful sight nonetheless. With the fleet gathered a mile out to sea from Monaco, Superyacht Media captured this unique moment on film from a low flying helicopter as the yachts motored, line abreast, serenely to Saint Jean Cap Ferrat a few miles along the Cote d’Azur. This truly was the photo opportunity of a lifetime!

Guests arrived by tender to the restaurant at the private and secluded Paloma Beach for a relaxing lunch and cocktails. Some cooled off for a swim while the more adventurous went wakeboarding and jet-skiing. The fleet returned home in the early evening to Monaco, in time for this evening’s black-tie dinner at the iconic Hotel de Paris.

It had been a fun day on the water, an opportunity to see the yachts do what they do best. Mark Cavendish of Heesen Yachts called it: “A fantastic day, a great first occasion and I’m convinced it will be the first of many to come. I have taken a bet with the organiser Tony Harris that we will see at least double the number of yachts next year. It has been a great day for all of us, and I think the owners have really enjoyed sailing their yachts together.”

Legendary yacht designer Ron Holland described it as “a unique and educational event in a beautiful setting.” Argentinean naval architect, Horacio Bozzo, commented: “This event pulls together all aspects of the yachting world, the owners, the designers, the builders, the media and the sea. The big thing is seeing all the yachts in action and, even more important, everyone has had fun today.”

This evening at the Hotel de Paris, superyacht owners, celebrities, and European royalty look forward to the official fundraiser of The Rendezvous, the Bal d’Oceana. Under the patronage of H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco and hosted by marine conservation charity Oceana, guests will enjoy a champagne reception on the Cote Jardin Terrasse, followed by a four-course dinner and live music entertainment courtesy of jazz sensation Clare Teal.
